IAyhan Cöner'den SizlereA Letter from Ayhan Cöner

Bu yaz, velilerin bana sorduğu soru değişti. Eskiden “hangi okul daha prestijli, hangisi daha köklü?” diye sorulurdu. Artık giderek daha çok şunu duyuyorum: “Hangi okul çocuğumu yapay zeka çağına hazırlıyor?”This summer, the question parents put to me has changed. Once it was “which school is more prestigious, which is more storied?” Increasingly now I hear something else: “Which school will prepare my child for the age of artificial intelligence?”

A worthy question. Yet to my mind the heart of the matter is not how much technology a school deploys, but whether the child’s own faculties — for thinking, for imagining, for making meaning — are kept intact. The most expensive tablets will not carry a classroom into the future; a teacher who can preserve a student’s curiosity will.

In this issue I have taken up precisely that tension: both the promise and the peril of artificial intelligence. From a neuroscientist’s warning to a school’s AI hackathon; from a student’s triumph in creative writing to a science lesson held high on a mountainside. For the most valuable knowledge is that which has not yet been translated — and in this age, the most valuable skill is that which has not yet been surrendered to the machine.

On this occasion, I should like to congratulate the students of our growing Swiss Education Circle family who, at the close of June, completed their year with distinction and earned their place in the next grade — and those who, as graduates, have received offers from the universities of their choosing. I wish them continued success in all that lies ahead.

A School for the Age of AI

Rosenberg “Vibe Coding Masters” — öğrenciler yapay zeka destekli prototipler geliştiriyor.Rosenberg’s “Vibe Coding Masters” — students building AI-assisted prototypes.

Institut auf dem Rosenberg in St. Gallen was last year named “the world’s best boarding school” in the Premium Switzerland report. Yet what makes a school first is not its past laurels but how well it reads the future. Rosenberg’s standout initiative this term illustrates precisely that vision.

On 12 June the school staged an event it called “Vibe Coding Masters” — rather more than an ordinary hackathon. Over the course of a single evening, students turned their ideas into working prototypes with AI-assisted tools. What was truly remarkable was the design of the evening: genuine industry partners (among them the data-analytics giant Palantir), professional software mentors, and a prize for the winning team — the chance to bring their idea to life alongside a real software firm.

This reflects Rosenberg’s educational philosophy: to position artificial intelligence not as a threat or a tool to be banned, but as a force to be wielded together with critical thinking and creativity. The question put to students was not “how will you use AI?” but “how will you create, lead, and think critically in the age of AI?”

George’s Expands Its Boarding Provision — and Offers a Rare Pairing

St. George's, Montreux — yeni yatılı bina projesi (Villa L'Empereur).St. George’s, Montreux — the new boarding-house project (Villa L’Empereur).

For St. George’s International School in Montreux, 2026 has been a pivotal year. By first adding an A-Level programme to its Senior School, the school became one of the few in Switzerland to offer both curricula alongside the IBDP. A-Levels are the favoured route for students bound especially for British universities, while the IBDP offers a broad, international foundation. Offering both at once gives families the flexibility to say, “I can choose the path that suits my child’s university ambitions.”

The school is now enlarging the boarding experience as well, having begun work on new boarding facilities. Among the plans are a boutique cinema room, a student lounge, a panoramic terrace overlooking Lake Geneva, and modern fitness spaces. This is more than an investment in bricks and mortar — it is a measure of how much weight is placed on the “second home” quality of boarding life.

Collège du Léman'dan dünya sahnesine: Kimya Olimpiyatı altın madalyasıFrom Collège du Léman to the World Stage: A Chemistry Olympiad Gold

CDL öğrencisi Apollo — İsviçre Kimya Olimpiyatı altın madalya sahibi.CDL student Apollo — gold medallist at the Swiss Chemistry Olympiad.

CDL'in IB2 yatılı öğrencilerinden biri, İsviçre Kimya Olimpiyatı'nda yaklaşık 800 katılımcı arasından altın madalya kazandı — ve şimdi İsviçre'yi temsil edecek son dört öğrenciden biri. Ama haberin asıl ilginç yanı, okulun yatılı müdürünün bu başarıyı yorumlama biçimi: “Kampüste yaşamak, öğrencinin ilgi alanına gerçekten dalmasını sağlıyor. Yatılı bir ortamda okul günü 16:00'da bitmiyor — öğrencilerin sevdikleri şeyi keşfetmek için sürekli zamanı ve fırsatı var.”One of CDL’s IB2 boarders won gold at the Swiss Chemistry Olympiad from among some 800 entrants — and is now one of the final four students who will represent Switzerland. Yet the most telling part of the story is how the school’s head of boarding reads the achievement: “Living on campus allows a student to immerse themselves truly in their field of interest. In a boarding environment the school day does not end at four o’clock — students have constant time and opportunity to explore what they love.”

This points to the least appreciated advantage of boarding education: time. At a day school a student goes home after lessons. At a boarding school the laboratory is open in the evening too, the teacher is just down the corridor, and curiosity can be fed the moment it stirs. Olympiad medals are won precisely in these “extra hours.”

ÇıkarımTakeaway

Yatılı eğitimin görünmeyen avantajı zamandır — ve zaman, tutkuya dönüştüğünde sonuç verir. The unseen advantage of boarding education is time — and time, once turned into passion, bears fruit.

What deserves notice is the geographic breadth of the list: the American Ivy League, Britain’s most select institutions (Oxbridge, Imperial, UCL), Canada (McGill), and Ireland (Trinity) all together. IV·BGöç Referandumu ve Yabancı ÖğrencilerThe Immigration Referendum & Foreign Students

14 Haziran 2026 — “10 Milyonluk İsviçre” nüfus tavanı referandumu.14 June 2026 — the “10-Million Switzerland” population-cap referendum.

On 14 June 2026, Switzerland held a vote of close concern to foreign families. The “No to a 10-Million Switzerland” initiative, led by the right-wing SVP, sought to keep the country’s population below ten million before 2050, to curb immigration if necessary, and even to terminate the free-movement agreement with the EU.

Sonuç: İnisiyatif reddedildi. The outcome: the initiative was rejected. Seçmenlerin yaklaşık %55'i ve 23 kantondan 13'ü hayır dedi; katılım %59 ile son on yılın en yükseklerinden biriydi.Roughly 55% of voters and 13 of the 23 cantons said no; turnout, at 59%, was among the highest of the past decade.

  1. İstikrar korundu.Stability was preserved. The “bilateral path” with the EU (free movement included) continues. Switzerland remains a predictable country, open to international students; for families eyeing boarding school, university, and later residence, uncertainty has lessened.
  2. İşgücü açığı, kalmak isteyenler için kapı demek.A labour shortage means an open door for those who wish to stay. Owing to shortages in care, healthcare, and gastronomy, Switzerland acknowledges its need for skilled foreign labour. Favourable ground for students who wish to study and then build a career there.
  3. Ama “yoğunluk stresi” tartışması bitmedi.Yet the debate over “density stress” is not over. Halkın %73'ü altyapının zorlandığını düşünüyor. Reddedilen, SVP'nin sert çözümüydü; sorun değil. Kurallar yeniden gündeme gelebilir — bu nedenle adımları zamanında atmak önemli. Some 73% feel infrastructure is under strain. What was rejected was the SVP’s harsh remedy, not the problem itself. VVeli SorusuThe Parents’ Question

“Yapay zeka çağında çocuğumun zihinsel gelişimi zarar görür mü? Okul seçerken dijitalleşmeye nasıl bakmalıyım?”“In the age of AI, will my child’s mental development suffer? How should I regard digitalisation when choosing a school?”

El yazısı ve kitapla “analog” öğrenme — Jäncke'nin vurguladığı yaklaşım.“Analogue” learning with handwriting and books — the approach Jäncke commends.

Professor emeritus Lutz Jäncke, one of the foremost neuroscientists at the University of Zurich, recently issued a warning that drew wide attention. His central thesis: the human brain is an adaptive organ that works on a “use it or lose it” principle. If you do not use a faculty, it weakens — if a child surrenders thinking, remembering, and deep reading to AI, he may lose the very chance to develop those faculties.

Ama AI'a tamamen karşı değil; asıl uyarısı şu: eleştirel düşünme beynin kendi yapması gereken bir etkinliktir.Jäncke is not alone; the concern is shared by AI pioneers such as Geoffrey Hinton. Since 2015 average IQ scores have stalled in some countries and even declined in Central Europe — “the reversal of the Flynn effect.” His recommendation is radical: a ban on telephones in schools and, especially in the younger years, a return to “analogue” learning. Yet he is not wholly opposed to AI; his real warning is that critical thinking is an activity the brain must perform itself.

What does this mean for a parent choosing a school?

The good news: most quality Swiss boarding schools already offer a balanced environment — orderly routines, off-screen activities, and strong human relationships. But not every school is the same; it is your right to ask these questions. At SEC, we convey each school’s digital and pedagogical approach as part of our evaluation.

VIOkul Yaşamından: Sınıfın Dışındaki DerslerFrom School Life: Lessons Beyond the Classroom

Tanzanya — Beau Soleil 10. sınıfın zorunlu yıl sonu yolculuğu.Tanzania — the compulsory end-of-year journey for Beau Soleil’s Grade 10.

The best lessons are not always given in the classroom. Perhaps the most distinctive trait of Swiss boarding schools is the way they carry learning beyond the four walls. The examples from our partner schools this term show that “experiential education” is not an abstract slogan but a concrete practice.

Beau Soleil — Tanzanya'da bir dönüşüm yolculuğuBeau Soleil — A Journey of Transformation in Tanzania

Collège Alpin Beau Soleil'in tüm 10. sınıf öğrencileri, zorunlu yıl sonu gezisinde Tanzanya'ya gidiyor (13–22 Haziran). All Grade 10 students of Collège Alpin Beau Soleil travel to Tanzania on their compulsory end-of-year trip (13–22 June). No mere safari: students divide into three groups and work on genuine community projects — installing a solar-power source in a village, building a clay oven, constructing a goat shelter, and contributing to the construction of a classroom. Alongside come a safari in Tarangire, a balloon ride at dawn, and local cultural activities. The aim: to carry academic learning into the real world and strengthen solidarity.

Aiglon — Öğrenciler öğretmen oluncaAiglon — When Students Become Teachers

At Aiglon College the mathematics department devised an ingenious solution. “AdMaths,” an additional Cambridge IGCSE qualification, would not fit the ordinary timetable. The solution: students in Grades 12 and 13 teach and mentor those in Grades 10 and 11. The result was unexpected — a student who had planned to read art relates that, while teaching, she began to think, “perhaps one day I might truly become a mathematics teacher.” Peer teaching transforms both the one who teaches and the one who learns.

Le Régent International School’s sailing team took part in the Bol d’Or du Léman, one of the largest inland-lake regattas in the world. This year’s race was held on 5–7 June 2026; next year it will take place on 11–13 June 2027. Senior School students spent roughly twenty-four hours on Lake Geneva with an experienced skipper — learning from the wind, the water, the currents, the night, and one another. The school frames it as “lessons that cannot be learned in a classroom”: patience, strategy, focus, and trust.

Leysin American School — Dağ, bir laboratuvar oluncaLeysin American School — When the Mountain Becomes a Laboratory

Leysin’s Grade 11 Biology and Environmental Systems students went out into the Alpine ecosystems surrounding the school to apply, in a real setting, the concepts they had learned in class. With stream-flow measurements, meadow quadrats, indicator species, and plant-identification techniques, they examined biodiversity, water quality, and ecosystem health on the spot. Here the school’s mountain setting is not a passive backdrop but an active part of the education.

Karakter ve gerçek anlayış, sınıfın dışında şekillenir. VIIFelsefe Köşesi — Yapay Zeka Çağında İnsan KalmakThe Philosophy Corner — Remaining Human

Geçtiğimiz haftalarda Collège Champittet'ten bir öğrenci, Nord Anglia Global Campus'ün yaratıcı yazım yarışmasında, 119 okuldan gelen 4.282 katılım arasında kategori birincisi oldu. Okul bu başarıyı duyururken çarpıcı bir not düştü: “Yapay zekanın insan yaratıcılığının yerini alacağını kim söylüyor? Böyle anlar, hayal gücünün, özgünlüğün ve hikâye anlatıcılığının hâlâ insana özgü güçler olduğunu kanıtlıyor.”In recent weeks a student from Collège Champittet took first place in his category in the Nord Anglia Global Campus creative-writing competition, among 4,282 entries from 119 schools. In announcing it, the school added a striking note: “Who says artificial intelligence will replace human creativity? Moments such as these prove that imagination, originality, and storytelling remain distinctly human powers.”

Machines are taking over calculation, memorisation, and repetition ever more ably — and this need not be a bad thing. The question is what remains. What remains is what machines can imitate but cannot truly do: to make meaning, to see an original connection among scattered fragments, to put oneself in another’s place. These are not skills of “efficiency” but of “humanity.”

In our first issue we borrowed an analogy from Lévi-Strauss: education is the cooking of raw potential over the right fire. Today we add: in the age of AI that “fire” is no longer access to knowledge — knowledge is everywhere, limitless and free. The true fire is the environment in which a child can preserve and develop his own faculties for thinking, imagining, and making meaning. To find that environment is our charge.
